我是陈独秀，中国共产党主要创始人和早期主要领导人，我就不讲我的功劳了，直接从大革命失败开说吧，以蒋介石为代表的国民党反动派认为我太左，污蔑我带着小弟乱搞，“打土豪”打到北伐军将领的父母了，“分田地”分到国民党官员的家人了，所以要置本党于死地。

I am Chen Duxiu, a principal founder and early key leader of the Communist Party of China. I won’t dwell on my contributions but start directly from the failure of the Great Revolution. The Kuomintang reactionaries, represented by Chiang Kai-shek, considered me too leftist, slandering me for leading my followers into chaos—"beating local tyrants" to the point of targeting parents of Northern Expedition generals, and "dividing land" to the families of Kuomintang officials—thus seeking to annihilate our Party.

本党激进的同志们，特别是血气方刚的青年们，包括我的儿子都批评我太右，说我妥协退让，不敢和国民党硬碰硬，但我知道，本党只有六岁多，国民党已经十五岁了，如果让六岁多的孩子拿着镰刀，去和已经十五岁，并且被苏联提供枪炮武装起来的杀手去拼命，我知道那是什么后果？许多革命志士被杀，我的两个儿子也牺牲了。

Radical comrades in our Party, especially the passionate youth including my own son, criticized me for being too rightist, accusing me of compromise and retreat, and lacking the courage to confront the Kuomintang headon. But I knew our Party was just over six years old, while the Kuomintang was already fifteen. If a sixyearold child, armed only with a sickle, were to fight a fifteenyearold killer equipped with guns and artillery provided by the Soviet Union, what would be the consequence? Many revolutionary martyrs were killed, and my two sons also sacrificed their lives.

我从来不惧怕国民党，我预判了他的垮台时间，我也不是妥协退让，我只希望本党可以闷声发展。事实上，在我们弱小的时候，蛰伏是最好的选择。直到抗战期间，本党蛰伏约十年，终于成长为身强力壮的青年了，最后打败了国民党，如果大革命时期我们不要锋芒太露，同样蛰伏起来，我们会很快瓦解或打败国民党，付出更小的代价。有人说我被历史误会，敌人们说我太左，同志们说我太右。

I never feared the Kuomintang; I predicted its collapse. Nor was I compromising or retreating—I only hoped our Party could develop quietly. In fact, when we were weak, lying low was the best choice. Until the War of Resistance, our Party lay low for about ten years and finally grew into a robust youth, ultimately defeating the Kuomintang. If during the Great Revolution we had not shown our edge too sharply but similarly lain low, we would have disintegrated or defeated the Kuomintang sooner at a lesser cost. Some say I was misunderstood by history; enemies called me too leftist, comrades called me too rightist.

我要感谢义侄张学良等人发动西安事变，他也是受新文化及五四运动觉醒的爱国进步青年，西安事变褪了蒋介石的神光，加速了国民党的溃败，为本党争取大约十年的蛰伏期。我要感谢毛泽东、朱德、刘少奇、周恩来、任弼时等大批追随于我的革命青年，领导本党隐忍蛰伏，卧薪尝胆，最终猛龙出山，雄兵百万，打败国民党，建立了新中国。

I want to thank my righteous nephew Zhang Xueliang and others for launching the Xi’an Incident. He too was a patriotic progressive youth awakened by the New Culture and May Fourth Movement. The Xi’an Incident stripped Chiang Kaishek of his divine aura, accelerated the Kuomintang’s collapse, and won our Party about ten years of lying low. I want to thank Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai, Ren Bishi, and many other revolutionary youth who followed me, leading our Party to endure and lie low, biding time until finally the mighty dragon emerged with a millionstrong army, defeated the Kuomintang, and founded New China.

青出于蓝而胜于蓝，一代更比一代强，我承认“五大书记”比我这个老师老头子更强，更有智慧，尽管我倒下了，他们继续替我举起旗帜，只要我举起的旗帜没有倒下，本党成功，同志们胜利，就是我的胜利。不管后人对我如何批评，我依然深感欣慰，如果本党永远存在，我就是永远的胜利者。

The pupil surpasses the master; each generation excels the last. I admit the "Five Great Secretaries" were stronger and wiser than this old teacher. Even though I fell, they continued to raise the banner for me. As long as the banner I raised does not fall, the success of our Party and the victory of my comrades are my victory. No matter how later generations criticize me, I remain deeply gratified. If our Party exists forever, I am forever the victor.
