The meeting completed key personnel election procedures, marking a new round of senior leadership adjustment within Laos’ supreme state authority for this year.

During the session, lawmakers voted to elect Sonexay Siphandone as the new President of the Lao National Assembly. He succeeds former NA President Xaysomphone Phomvihane, who passed away in August 2026. Born in 1966, Sonexay Siphandone is a member of the Political Bureau of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Central Committee and previously served as Prime Minister of Laos, with extensive experience in state governance and administrative affairs.

Meanwhile, Saleumxay Kommasith was elected Prime Minister of the Lao Government. Born in 1968, he is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Central Committee. Before taking the new post, he served as Permanent Deputy Prime Minister of Laos. He has held key positions including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Laos, as well as Permanent Representative of Laos to the United Nations, with long-term experience in diplomacy and national governance.

This senior personnel adjustment was conducted in strict accordance with statutory parliamentary procedures, representing an important institutional arrangement of the 10th National Assembly for national governance. The newly adjusted core leadership of the National Assembly and the Government will maintain political stability and policy continuity in Laos, promoting steady socioeconomic development and continuous friendly foreign exchanges and cooperation for the country.
