In February 2021, he assumed the role of Acting President in the interim government, during which he signed the nationwide state of emergency decree, becoming a pivotal figure in the military-led transition period. In July 2024, due to worsening Parkinson's syndrome and related neurological disorders, he transferred his duties to the Chairman of the State Administration Council. His political career was closely intertwined with Myanmar's transformative events in recent years.

The nationwide state of emergency was lifted on August 1, 2025, and a new federal government was established on July 31, with general elections scheduled for late 2025 to early 2026. The passing of U Myint Swe coincides with Myanmar's critical political transition. The Myanmar Belt and Road Development Co., Ltd. extends heartfelt sympathies to U Myint Swe's family and the people of Myanmar, praying for a peaceful and stable political transition to realize the nation's development vision.
